Lynne Millman

Canadian artist Lynne Millman was born in London, England in 1960 and spent her early childhood there, traveling around Europe with her expatriate Canadian parents and two younger sisters. The family moved back to Canada in 1966 and settled in Southwestern Ontario. There Lynne eventually obtained a degree in Visual Arts from the University of Western Ontario in London. She stayed on for several years in the Ontario city, where she worked primarily as Head Scenic Artist at the Grand Theatre, as well as at the nearby Stratford Shakespearean Festival. She continued to paint and exhibit her own work during this time, and her Fire Garden and Self-Portrait series were seen widely at public and private galleries throughout Ontario.

In 1997 Lynne and her partner Paul Bates decided to move to the Maritimes, where they settled into a historic oceanfront house in the small fishing hamlet of Blandford, Nova Scotia. There Lynne has been operating a painting studio and gallery ever since, as well as painting scenery at CBC Halifax and writing a regular weekly arts column for the local newspaper. Paul’s decision to enter the international entertainment field has allowed the couple to live and work in many diverse countries and cultures in the past several years – Amsterdam, Montreal and Las Vegas with Cirque du Soleil, and Doha, Qatar, where Paul was working on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Asian Games.

Lynne and Paul married in Halifax, Nova Scotia in February, shortly before embarking on their latest adventure in Belgium, where Paul is working for Dragone in La Louviere. Along with their coonhounds, Sadie and Josie, they are currently living in a historic mill in Steenkerque, deep in the Belgian countryside. Here Lynne is being inspired anew by long walks in the country, as well as by the history which underlies the European landscape.
